Caring for your infant’s oral health is an important start for a lifetime of healthy habits and good oral health. We’re here to help you along the way!
When your child begins teething gestures, expect to see that first tooth very soon! While the thought of seeing your child’s first tooth come in may be exciting, it can be an uncomfortable process.
Teething, on average, begins between four to seven months old and can be accompanied by swollen gums, drooling, and crying. Another big sign of teething is the constant need to bite objects.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend the first dental visit by your child’s first birthday.
It is important to practice good oral hygiene, even prior to tooth eruption. Your baby’s gums should be cleaned with a damp washcloth or gauze pad once or twice daily.
Once their first tooth appears, you can again use a cloth or begin lightly brushing with a soft toothbrush. Children should receive assistance with properly brushing their teeth until they’re seven or eight years old.
Thumb-sucking and pacifier use are habits that are normal, and even expected, in young children, particularly before preschool.
When you bring your child for a dental visit, we will evaluate their oral health, including their teeth, jaw, and speech. We are happy to give age-appropriate tips to help break a sucking habit when indicated.
Ankyloglossia, or “tongue-tie,” is a condition most often noticed from birth up to the first month of life. A small piece of tissue connects the tip of the tongue to the floor of the mouth, which can affect feeding (breast or bottle), eating, speaking, and swallowing.
If you feel your child’s tongue-tie is a concern, we will evaluate, discuss and perform a simple procedure to correct if necessary.
